Fun Facts about Our Area
The carpet industry’s roots go back to Dalton in 1895 when Catherine Evans Whitener made a homemade tufted bedspread. Her bedspread was so popular that she couldn’t keep up with demand. Whitener enlisted the help of family to form The Evans Manufacturing Company. The technology used by them was eventually transferred to the manufacture of carpet.
Dalton was originally called Cross Plains but was eventually changed to honor the founder, Edward Dalton White.
In its day, the Western and Atlantic railroad tunnel (which Tunnel Hill was named for) was an outstanding feat of engineering.
More than 90% of the functional carpet produced in the world today is made within a 65 mile.
